Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)
By Randall Renoud
Watch D.O.G.S. is an innovative program focusing on safety and education in schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: (1) to provide an unobtrusive fathering presence, and (2) to provide a positive and active role-model for students at the school. Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and uncles are asked to spend at least one day at their student’s school volunteering. They will support the school through monitoring the school property, working one-on-one or in small groups, reading flashcards, assisting with homework, being a sport’s referee, being a set of listening ears, or for whatever needs to be done to plant seeds of success in the lives of our elementary students.
Wellsville Elementary School continues to solicit “dads” to volunteer at least one day during the school year. During the 2009-10 school year, a “WatchDOG” was in our building more than 100 days. This year, we would like to have a father-figure volunteer at least 80% of the days students are in session.
Volunteers may register by contacting Mr. Kurt Taylor at 785-883-2072 or emailing wellsvillewatchdogs@live.com. The WatchDOG schedule can be found by going to the district’s website at wellsville-usd289.org; then click on Wellsville Elementary School, then find the WatchDOG logo, click on it and then the calendar tab will appear. Volunteers cannot register on the website, just check available dates.
