The Eagle Spotlight

Replaces The Eagle Cry at Wellsville High School

By:  Dawn Rottinghaus

Like the old cliché, “Out with the old and in with the new,” the Wellsville High School newspaper has not only changed its name, but it has changed its format and visibility forever. As with many newspapers and print media, technology has improved, leaving the necessity for printed materials behind.  With this in mind, the original Wellsville High School newspaper, The Eagle Cry, is no longer available, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t read about activities at WHS.

In the past, news about WHS was available to the student body, staff and some community members.  Now it is available for the world to see—our new name—The Eagle Spotlight.  Students have come together in Dawn Rottinghaus’ In-House Training class to create Wellsville High Schools’ first blog site.  Although the site is in a blog format, it is easy to follow and allows for the Eagle Spotlight staff to place photos onto each story.  It also serves as a better archiving tool for activities at WHS, and it allows for instant electronic feedback to the staff.

The greatest aspect of the eaglespotlight.org is that all of the stories the staff writes about pertain to activities at WHS.  Staff is also able to write more current articles, as opposed to writing about games or activities that occurred three weeks previous.  Also, the amount of money invested into the blog site doesn’t come close to matching the cost of printing a school newspaper.

There are many things we are starting to learn about this wonderful site’s capabilities.  The staff, along with myself, are eager to try some new things.  One of the staff’s biggest priorities is to create short videos, along with picture slide shows.  We are also in the process of archiving abbreviated stats pages for the athletic activities.  Because our staff is so small, we welcome any school related photos to incorporate into our stories that readers may have taken.  If you have any questions, please email Dawn Rottinghaus or call (785) 883-2057 ext. 1102.

So STOP!  Take a moment and log on to eaglespotlight.org.  See for yourself the incredible stories and use of technology that is occurring in the Wellsville School district.
