Wellsville School-Community Health Coalition Update
February 4th, 2020
The Wellsville School-Community Health Coalition met in November and January. The coalition is a collaboration of community organizations and residents, being led by USD 289 and the Franklin County Health Department. This coalition seeks to improve all aspects of health (physical, social/emotional, mental) for students and families, civic engagement, community partnerships, and overall resident and community wellbeing. Through a survey of attendees, the following areas were identified as core areas of interest and focus for the committee: healthy food access, community facilities and activities, community service opportunities, community supports related to mental health prevention, community information/communication, and creating a welcoming community.
In January, committee members took a deep dive into healthy food access. Erin Laurie, Franklin County Health Department, led a discussion on common barriers to healthy food access in rural areas, and emerging models to address this need. Sub-Committees were created based on the core areas of focus mentioned above. Short and long term goals and projects were discussed and created in the sub-committees. Short term projects discussed include the following:
Family, Fun, Fitness Night
Wellness Fair
Biking / Walking Clubs - Spring Kick-off event
Community Service Projects
